Dr. Renee Somers is a professor of English at Bridgewater State University. Her lecture explores how outspoken and unconventional women in the 19th century were often labeled as "hysterical" and subjected to harsh judgment, gossip, and even institutionalization. Focusing on Lizzie's strained family life and the rigid gender roles of Victorian New England, we'll trace how fear of female rebellion shaped the story we think we know.
